A Study of Arabic Loanwords in Indonesian Language
Abstract
This study aims to examine the pronunciation and spelling adjustments of Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language, as well as the semantic shifts they undergo. The research employs a descriptive-qualitative method, analyzing the phonological and morphological changes of these loanwords. The findings indicate that most Arabic loanwords have undergone significant phonological and morphological adaptations to conform to Indonesian linguistic structures, particularly in terms of vowel and consonant systems. Additionally, semantic shifts, including narrowing, broadening, and pejoration, are observed in a substantial number of these words. The study concludes that the integration of Arabic loanwords into Indonesian is a complex process involving multiple linguistic adjustments, ultimately enriching the vocabulary and cultural landscape of the Indonesian language.
