The Role of Mandarin in Indonesia's Tourism Sector
Abstract
This study investigates the role of Mandarin in Indonesia's tourism sector, focusing on its impact on communication, cultural exchange, and economic development. With the increasing number of Mandarin-speaking tourists visiting Indonesia, understanding the dynamics of language use becomes crucial for optimizing tourism strategies. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews of tourists, tour operators, and local stakeholders. Findings reveal that while English remains a dominant language, Mandarin proficiency significantly enhances the tourist experience for Chinese visitors and offers competitive advantages for businesses catering to this demographic. The study highlights the need for improved Mandarin language training in the tourism workforce and the development of targeted marketing materials to better attract and serve Mandarin-speaking tourists. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of linguistic landscapes in global tourism and provides practical recommendations for policymakers and industry professionals in Indonesia. Keywords: Tourism, Mandarin, Indonesia, Linguistic Landscape, Cultural Exchange
