The significance of HIV and non-communicable diseases in Africa
Abstract
The HIV epidemic in Africa has been a major public health concern for several decades but there is now a growing recognition of the impact of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region. This review examines the intersection of HIV and NCDs in Africa, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for integrated prevention and control. The epidemiological patterns of HIV and NCDs are discussed, along with the common risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms that link these conditions. The review also explores the implications for healthcare systems and provides recommendations for strengthening research, policy, and practice to address the dual burden of HIV and NCDs in Africa.
